“I started this website to save my own life.”

I started this website to save my own life.  Now, I want to share what I’ve learned in that process with you. Since my diabetes diagnosis in 2007, I’ve done everything right on some days and everything wrong on others. So I know how frustrating it can be to get preachy, guilt-inducing advice.  You won’t find that here. The mission at Healthy Diabetic is to SHARE life-saving information to SUPPORT your effort to SUCCEED.  I want this to be a place where people with all types of diabetes can come for comfort, guidance and inspiration. You CAN live a long and healthy life with diabetes.

“There is no way in h@!! I am taking insulin.”

The day I was diagnosed my blood sugar was 450. The doctor handed me a few insulin pens and a sheet of paper with instructions. I sat in my car staring out the window and I remember thinking ONE THING. “There is no way in h@!! I am taking insulin.” And I didn’t. For awhile. That did NOT work out well for me. When you’re diagnosed with something like cancer, an entire team of doctors swoop in to begin your treatment. But diabetes? You get a pill or insulin, some instructions and a request to cut back on carbs. For most, much more support is needed. That’s why I decided to create HealthyDiabetic.org.

“You CAN feel better than you have ever felt in your life when you are being a DIA-BAD-ASS.”

I’m not slamming doctors. I love mine. (If you don’t love yours, find others because your life depends on them.) But understand they are treating the masses. Diabetes affects everyone so individually. That’s why many of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned have come from other people with diabetes. A little bad news. Diabetes is a BFD. It has nearly killed me twice with some “lovely bouts” of diabetic ketoacidosis. But there’s good news too. You CAN feel better than you have ever felt in your life when you are being a DIA-BAD-ASS. (A term I stole from One Drop’s Jeff Dachis.)

“You don’t have to do this alone.”

“You replace every molecule of every cell in your body within the course of only 1 year…It is quite literally possible, no matter how bad you’re feeling or eating today, to be utterly transformed in just 365 days.” Best sentence EVER, right? It comes from Dr. Woodson Merrell who gives me hope that I will be there for my husband, 3 teenagers and 3 dogs for a long time. The thought of missing anything in their lives is heartbreaking and unacceptable. Wherever you are in your journey with diabetes, I hope the information you find here is inspiring, reassuring and USEFUL. Unfortunately, you don’t get a day off diabetes. Healthy Diabetic is here to make sure you don’t have to do this alone.
